In the Balkans, coffee almost never arrives alone. There’s always a little something on the side. Here are five pairings from our case that we think you’ll love.
1. Bosnian coffee and baklava
The classic. Our Bosnian coffee ($4.00) is strong and smooth, and baklava ($5.00) is sweet and nutty. Each one makes the other taste better. If you only try one pairing, make it this one. (How to drink Bosnian coffee)
2. Turkish tea and kifle
Bright, clear Turkish tea ($3.00) with a soft, golden kifla ($2.50). It’s light, it’s simple, and it’s the kind of thing you could have every afternoon. (More about Turkish tea)
3. Bosnian coffee and tres leches
Tres leches cake ($6.00) is a soft sponge soaked in three kinds of milk and topped with cream and caramel. You might know it from Latin American bakeries, but a version called trileçe is hugely popular across Turkey and the Balkans too. Its creamy sweetness and a cup of strong coffee are a perfect match.
4. Turkish tea and banana chocolate chip loaf
Sometimes you just want something cozy. A slice of our moist banana chocolate chip loaf ($2.00) with a hot glass of tea is exactly that. Great for a quick break in the afternoon.
5. Bosnian coffee and a chocolate croissant
Buttery, flaky pastry filled with rich chocolate ($7.00), with a strong coffee on the side. It’s a little bit Paris and a little bit Sarajevo, and it works.
Make it a slow afternoon
There’s a Bosnian word, ćejf, for the feeling of enjoying something slowly and without rushing. That’s what coffee and sweets are about. Sit down, take your time, and have another piece if you want one.
