Ask anyone from Sarajevo what food they miss most, and there’s a good chance the answer is ćevapi.
Ćevapi (say it “che vah pee”) are small, hand shaped sausages of minced meat, grilled until they’re browned on the outside and juicy inside. No casing, no fuss. Just good meat, salt and fire.
A Sarajevo tradition
In the old part of Sarajevo, called Baščaršija, there are little grill houses that serve almost nothing but ćevapi. People line up for them at lunch, after work and late at night. Every family has an opinion about which place does them best.
The Sarajevo way is simple. The meat is the star, so there’s no heavy sauce and no long list of sides.
How they’re served
Traditionally, ćevapi come tucked inside somun, a soft, puffy flatbread that soaks up all the juices from the grill. On the side you’ll usually find chopped raw onion, which adds a sharp crunch to every bite.
Here’s how to eat them:
- Open up the bread like a pocket.
- Take a ćevap with a little onion.
- Use a piece of the bread to grab the next one.
Some people eat them with a fork. Most people don’t bother.
How many should you order?
In Bosnia, ćevapi come by the piece. Five is a light meal, ten is what most hungry adults go for. At Sarajevo Kitchen you can order:
- 5 ćevapi for $12.99
- 10 ćevapi for $18.99
- 15 ćevapi for $24.99
- 20 ćevapi for $31.99
The bigger sizes are perfect for sharing. Put a plate of twenty in the middle of the table and watch it disappear.
Made with traditional Bosnian beef
Our ćevapi are traditional Bosnian grilled beef, and like everything on our menu they’re 100% halal. If you’ve been looking for proper ćevapi in Lethbridge, this is it.
What to have with them
Ćevapi pair well with something sweet afterwards. Finish with a piece of baklava and a small cup of Bosnian coffee, and you’ve had a real Sarajevo meal.
